How to Title and Register a Vehicle

Required documents for vehicles purchased from a Colorado dealer:

  • Title or Certificate of Origin
  • Standard sales tax receipt
  • Odometer disclosure statement
  • Application for title
  • Original or certified copy of security agreement if the vehicle is financed
  • Other documents – depending on what the specifics are
  • If the vehicle is financed or leased, Colorado dealers will forward paperwork directly to Prowers County Motor Vehicle Office, and a notice will be mailed to you.

If you paid cash for the vehicle, the dealer will more than likely send the paperwork directly to you, usually by certified mail.  Bring in those documents along with secure and verifiable identification and proof of insurance to register your vehicle.

Required documents for vehicles purchased from an out-of-state dealer:

  • Title or Certificate of Origin
  • Proof that state sales tax was paid, or we will collect sales taxes
  • Purchase order from dealer showing purchase price
  • Verification of VIN must be completed by a Colorado law enforcement office or Colorado licensed dealer
  • Odometer disclosure statement
  • Original or certified copy of security agreement if the vehicle is financed
  • Proof of insurance
  • Weight slip, if applicable
  • Secure and verifiable identification

Required documents for vehicles purchased from an individual:

  • Title.
  • Bill of sale indicating purchase price
  • If the title is issued by a state other than Colorado, then a VIN inspection is required
  • Odometer disclosure statement if the vehicle is less than ten years old.  Most titles have a section of the title for odometer. Disclosure statement
  • Current proof of insurance
  • Weight slip, if applicable
  • Secure and verifiable identification

Temporary Permits:

  • Original title signed over to buyer, copy of front and back of title or notarized Bill of Sale
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Secure and verifiable identification

A person may operate a motor vehicle upon the highway before registering the vehicle if the vehicle was purchased within the last 36 hours from a person who is not a licensed motor vehicle dealer

The requirements are:

  • The vehicle must have been purchased either on a Saturday, Sunday, legal holiday, or between 5 P.M. and 8 A.M.
  • The vehicle is being driven from the place where the seller stored the vehicle to the place where the buyer intends to store the vehicle
  • The buyer possesses, in the vehicle, a bill of sale that shows the time, and date of sale and that is signed by both the seller and buyer
  • The buyer possesses, in the vehicle, proof of insurance

Homemade Trailer Requirements:

  • Weight slip
  • VIN inspection – if the weight is over 2,000 lbs., it MUST be a certified VIN inspection
  • Dimensions (example 8 feet long by 6 feet wide)
  • Value (how much the trailer is worth)

PROOF OF INSURANCE IS REQUIRED FOR EVERY TRANSACTION, WHETHER FOR PERMIT OR REGISTRATION
